The Death Penalty
As people of God, and followers of Jesus the Christ; we firmly believe that the taking of a life is a sin against all of creation and the Creator.
We do not believe any human made authority has the right to take a life. The taking of a life is not an action of “justice” but one of “punishment” only. We do not believe that government sanctioned execution helps anyone to heal or find closure, it just adds to the loss and pain. It also prevents any of the possible healing that could come from a restorative justice system.
Our Sacred Scripture supports that this view.
As a Christian paying taxes in a state that supports and actively uses the death penalty, we are in essence guilty of murder. We in no way recommend not paying taxes, but we do ask our churches to make it known to their local and state governments that the Death Penalty is something we cannot in good conscious support nor condone.
We believe that for a justice system to truly be one of “justice” it must be a system based on “Restorative Justice” and not a punitive system.
